In a significant relief for taxpayers, the Income Tax Department has announced an extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the assessment year 2025-26. The new deadline has been moved from September 15, 2025, to September 16, 2025. Initially, the deadline was set for July 31, 2025, but it was previously extended to mid-September.
The official account of the Income Tax India shared the update on social media, stating, "KIND ATTENTION TAXPAYERS! The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025. To facilitate necessary updates, the e-filing portal will undergo maintenance from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on 16th September 2025."
Clarification on Social Media Claims
On a related note, the Income Tax Department clarified that there had been no further extensions beyond September 15, 2025, countering misinformation circulating on social media. The department emphasized that false messages were being shared, claiming that the deadline had been pushed to September 30.
In their statement, the department reiterated, "A fake news is in circulation stating that the due of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025."
